The Houston Ship Channel, the conduit for ocean-going vessels between Houston-area terminals and the Gulf of Mexico,was shut on Saturday, March 22 following a collision between a Kirby Inland Marine oil barge and a cargo ship.

Today, March 24, marks the 25th anniversary of the Exxon Valdez oil spill in which 260,000–750,000 barrels of crude flowed into the Prince William Sound in Alaska after the super tanker ran aground on a reef.

Until the Deepwater Horizon tragedy of 2010, this was the largest offshore oil spill in US history, and still ranks as one of the world’s greatest every environmental catastrophes. That said, Exxon Valdez doesn’t even make it onto the list of the very worst oil spills in human history, which you will find plotted in the timeline below.
