Nazery Khalid

Nazery Khalid is a maritime analyst who is well-published and sought after by the media and has been involved as a speaker, moderator and panelist in over 300 seminars, conferences and summits worldwide. He came to prominence in this field at Maritime Institute of Malaysia (MIMA), a policy think tank under the Ministry of Transport Malaysia, where he served as Senior Fellow / Research Coordinator and Head of Center of Maritime Economics and Industries from 2004 to 2014.

Nazery is a prolific commentator of the maritime sector and has published over 350 articles in print (including refereed journals and chapters in books) and online on a wide range of maritime topics. These include maritime economics (ports, shipping, shipbuilding, offshore oil and gas), maritime supply chain management and maritime security and diplomacy.  He has published books on ship financing and multimodal transport in Malaysia and edited two conference proceedings on the Straits of Malacca.

He was visiting scholar at Bahria University, Karachi (2008), Cardiff Business School (2010), University Paris Diderot (2011), National Institute of South China Sea Studies in Hainan, China (2013) and Sun Yat Sen University in Guangzhou (2013).  He is currently an Adjunct Professor at the School of Ocean Engineering at Universiti Malaysia Terengganu.

Nazery has represented Malaysia at International Maritime Organization meetings and ASEAN Maritime Transport Working Group meetings.  He sits on the Advisory Panel of Netherlands Maritime Institute of Technology Malaysia and the Advisory Council of Yayasan Peneraju Pendiidkan Bumiputera, a Malaysian government agency promoting education.  He held the post of Honorary Secretary, Association of Marine Industries of Malaysia (AMIM), an association representing 130 members in Malaysia’s marine industries, from 2015 to 2018.

Nazery is currently Head, Group Corporate Communications at Boustead Heavy Industries Corporation Berhad, a company listed on Bursa Malaysia and primarily engaged in shipbuilding and ship repair and in the defence and security industry. Prior to his involvement in the maritime sector, Nazery spent 15 years working in the financial services industry including in banking, stockbroking, stock exchange, corporate finance and venture capital.  He holds an MBA from International Islamic University, Malaysia and a BA in Business Administration from Ottawa University, Kansas, USA.
