Workshop Day - 6th May, 2025

10:45 am - 11:30 am REGISTRATION

11:30 am - 1:00 pm WORKSHOP A: Training and Competence in a Multifuel Future
Claudia Beumer - Membership and Communications Manager, SGMF

As the maritime sector shifts to a multifuel future, the rise of low-flashpoint fuels such as LNG, methanol and ammonia brings some safety challenges. With each fuel type requiring distinct handling procedures and safety measures, establishing robust training programs is essential to ensure competence across the industry. Led by SGMF, this interactive workshop will focus on the critical skills, overlaps and unique challenges of working with low-flashpoint fuels.

11:30 am - 1:00 pm WORKSHOP B: The Hydrogen Economy

Hydrogen is foundational to the production of many alternative fuels that are considerations for the future, such as ammonia and methanol. Developing a robust hydrogen economy is essential for scaling these fuels, and all stakeholders across the value chain will be impacted by the development of this economy. This workshop will explore the current state of hydrogen production, distribution, and utilisation in maritime, as well as its future potential to underpin a low-carbon shipping industry, and what each stakeholder's role is in this.

• How is the hydrogen economy evolving to meet maritime demand?

• What are the challenges and opportunities in scaling hydrogen production for the shipping industry?

• How can hydrogen infrastructure support the transition to ammonia methanol and eFuels?

• What are the long-term prospects for hydrogen in enabling a zero-carbon maritime sector?

1:00 pm - 2:00 pm NETWORKING LUNCH

2:00 pm - 3:30 pm WORKSHOP C: Integrating LNG and Onshore Power – Challenges and Solutions for Fuel EU Compliance

The FuelEU Maritime regulation mandates the use of onshore power (OPS) for ships at berth in European ports to reduce emissions. However, integrating LNG ships with OPS presents unique challenges, particularly regarding safe and efficient connections through reeling systems. This workshop explores these challenges, to develop practical solutions that balance compliance, safety, and operational efficiency.

• Discussion on the technical challenges of reeling systems for LNG connections.

• Brainstorm key design considerations for reeling systems and operational protocols to ensure safe and efficient LNG and OPS integration.

• Identify gaps in current technology or regulations that need addressing to support broader LNG adoption in OPS-compatible ports.

2:00 pm - 3:30 pm WORKSHOP D: Viability of eFuels in the Present and Future Regulatory Landscape

Join this workshop to delve into current regulations, to work together to understand where efuels fit into the picture - and how this could impact the wider value chain. From looking at EU regulation, to a general overview of the global picture.

• What are the regulatory hurdles and the project pipelines within maritime?

• How much of these fuels can we expect in the marine industry compared to other industries?

• How are the costs going to compare to current fuel use and how much could this change over time?

• What financing incentives are already there and what could be implemented to better this?

3:30 pm - 3:40 pm END OF WORKSHOP DAY
