Digital Process Safety Management for Operational Excellence
The Process Safety Management (PSM) of Highly Hazardous Chemicals standard has been around almost 30 years. WOW!!! This standard was created by industry leaders, and was designed to prevent unwanted releases of hazardous chemicals and flammables. PSM is the de facto standard for world-wide risk management, and it is applied in many industries including Pharmaceuticals, Pulp and Paper, Oil and Gas, the chemical process industry and many other markets because it works. It has similar requirements to many other regulations, legislation and guidance like the EPA's Risk Management Program, BSEE Safety and Environmental Management System, The Chemical Manufacturers Association's Responsible Care® Program, GMP, ISO 9000, 14000, 18000 and many others.
Of course, there is no explicit requirement to automate PSM, but there is a growing trend in industry to do so to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of its requirements. This paper discusses the requirements and benefits of leveraging PSM software systems. This presentation also reveals best & bad practice concerning digitizing the execution of Process Safety Management. Companies that do it well, leverage it for operational excellence and make money with it. Companies that don’t do this well, are wasting money.
We will address what PSM is, why do we have it, what is not PSM, who executes PSM, Governing Legs and Regs, its relation to Operational Excellence, the PSM Elements and how to address them with software. We will also discuss how to optimize PSM performance, what can you do, what are managers afraid of and best and bad practice.
